The center support in a 6R80 is an all aluminum drum that houses the Intermediate clutch pack and the lower Reverse piston. The Direct Drum shaft passes right through the center of it. Since it is all aluminum and aluminum is not a great bushing material, we started seeing galling and damage to the center support in some failed units. What we did to eliminate this issue is to modify the aluminum by machining it back and pressing in a bronze bushing. With the bronze in place, we no longer experienced the galling or scraping through the center of the support.
