The factory first gear OWC is made from a sinter-forging that is very weak and brittle. The clearances of the two piece part, and the ratchet mechanism are very large. This creates an excessive amount of lateral movement and an inconsistency of the stand engagement.
Our replacement OWC is CNC'd from billet steel and the tolerances of the ratchet mechanism, and the clearances of the separate pieces are brought down for a precision fit. This creates a positive stand engagement, and a consistent smooth operation.
The Billet OWC assembly is a two piece component that replaces the brittle factory sintered pieces with billet steel items. As is the way with all things (such as pistons in engines), the material selected trades off a degree of the OE parts brittle nature with a slightly softer but far more forgiving material. This is a balancing act of durability vs lifespan and the selected steel material will last for many, many passes in performance applications
Assembly of your new billet OWC will require removal and reuse of 4 components from your original OWC:
- 10 x engagement struts
- 10 x energizing springs
- 1 x retaining shim
- 1 x assembly circlip
The Ford 6R80 has undergone numerous revisions over the years and we have chosen to build the MSR OWC based off the latest version of it that Ford came out with as it is a better design and obviously most likely to be serviced by the industry for years to come. Some of these changes mean that the factory OWC you have in your existing transmission may not work with the pieces we manufacture so you may need to start off with a later version.
